Mobile App Design Process
Designing mobile apps is like building a house. Construction and design teams need to agree on a clear-cut plan of how to bring what is in everyone’s imagination to life. Technical elements meet aesthetic finesse to deliver a product that speaks to users on a personal level. At Youtech, we have a “four-step-with-a-bunch-of-little-steps in-between” process of designing your ideal mobile application to address not just visual components, but user experience considerations such as screen flow, glanceability, and scrolling commands.
1. Creative Meeting
We begin with a client kickoff meeting to determine goals for your app and discuss core functionalities, brand guidelines, and your creative vision. We also do our due diligence to learn as much as possible about your industry, company history, and product lines.
2. Blueprint and Wireframe
First, we create an app blueprint detailing the flow of the customer journey through each app screen and proposed menu item. This is the “bare bones” representation of your app that shows the primary points of interaction for customers.
From there, we build an app wireframe to set each screen’s hierarchy and placement in the navigation that makes the most organizational sense.
From there, we conceptualize the design elements that will bring what is in your head to the forefront. The designer on your project will send mockups of proposed colors, fonts, logos/logo edits, and screen layouts for your approval while working on any other visual components that are imperative to your app.
Once our interpretation of your vision is approved, it’s time for what’s known as the “make it look pretty” stage: We officially move forward designing the rest of your app screens. We hand off our designs to our developers to apply it to the back-end infrastructure so the two blend cohesively into one dynamic experience. The last stage is submitting it to the Google Play and Apple App Stores.
Designing an app’s user interface is similar to that of a website’s, but there are additional considerations. We design the physical screens for glanceability and quick scanning, as most consumers download apps to save time and get through processes quicker. We uphold visual consistency and ensure good flow from one design element to another so users have little disruptions or waiting between commands.
